The vine – like the name of the girl who drew the picture – is a climbing plant.
Gently, the vine winds itself around whatever is willing to receive it.
It brings with it fruit – sweet grapes, memories of summer, the scents of courtyards that embrace homes and family members.
In the drawing, the vine twists and surrounds one big heart.
This heart is located exactly in the middle, between an Israeli courtyard and one in Gaza.
It is an image of what we would all like to see: something that connects instead of divides, that embraces instead of rejects.
The vine in the drawing is a symbol of roots, of calm, of hope that grows even from below, from the earth.
It reminds us that it’s possible to dream of a different kind of neighborhood – calmer, simpler – like a child drawing a big heart with a climbing vine.
